This is the only full length album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers that includes Dave Navarro as a member. While sales and popularity of this album paled in comparison to the band's best-selling previous release, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, it is still the band's third best selling album (behind Californication). On 9/26/01, this album was officially certified as a double-platinum album. Many of those who were disappointed in the album pinned the blame on Dave Navarro because he was the newest member of the band, and came from a different musical background.

This album also marked the first time in three years that Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins worked together. Steve plays on One Big Mob; Dave's half brother, Gabriel James Navarro also performs on that track. A recording of his crying was used.
