IGGY POP JOINS HOT LINEUP ON WEEKEND MUSIC MARQUEE
Author: Craig Rosen
Rock fans have some tough decisions to make this weekend.
Tonight at the Whisky, 8901 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, rock legend Iggy Pop celebrates the release of his new A&M album, "Instinct," with a rare club appearance.
For these warm-up shows, in advance of a planned major tour, Pop has put together a crack band that includes former Hanoi Rocks guitarist Andy McCoy; U.K. Subs bassist Alvin Perry; keyboard player Seamus Beaghen, who played with on Pop's "Blah Blah Blah" tour; and drummer Paul Garisto, who has worked with the Psychedelic Furs.
If you can't catch Iggy tonight, try Saturday at Scream, 607 S. Park View St., Los Angeles. Opening the show is local contender for Pop's throne, Jane's Addiction.
The same evening Iggy is packing them in at the Whisky, Gotham godfathers of punk the Ramones make their annual appearance at the Hollywood Palladium, 6215 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. The gig is hot on the heels of the release of their greatest-hits collection, "Ramonesmania." Opening the show are local punk clowns the Dickies.
Also tonight, Los Angeles' favorite transplanted twosome, House of Freaks, plays two shows at Club Lingerie, 6507 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood. Opening the first show is Glass Eye of Austin, Texas. On hand for the late show is former Long Ryder and Freaks' chum Steven McCarthy.
Saturday there are more tough decisions to make. Glasnost comes to Burbank as Soviet band Timemachine & Alexander Gradsky makes its first Los Angeles appearance, strumming for the American Soviet Folk Festival at the Starlight Amphitheatre, 1249 Lockheed View Drive, Burbank. Also on the bill are the Knitters - better known as the members of X with bassist Jonny Ray Bartel and former Youngbloods singer Jesse Colin Young.
Over at Lhasaland, 817 N. Vine St., Hollywood, Downy Mildew, one of the city's finest bands, makes an appearance on Saturday. Joining the show are Black Bird, the latest project from the Kinman brothers, and Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano, performing solo.
Across town at At My Place, 1026 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, blues legend Etta James performs two shows each tonight and Saturday.
On the jazz front, acoustic guitarist Alex DeGrassi performs tonight at the Mayfair Theatre, 214 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica; singer Chris Connor plays tonight through Sunday at the Catalina Bar & Grill, 1640 N. Cahuenga, Hollywood; and piano-playing crooner Mose Allison returns for an encore engagement tonight and Saturday at the Vine St. Bar & Grill, 1610 Vine St., Hollywood.
