CRITIC'S CHOICE: POP
Author: Cary Darling

Anaheim's Celebrity Theatre deserves credit for bringing some of the most talked about hip-hop acts to Orange County, and that tradition continues Saturday when EPMD, NWA, 2 Live Crew, and Young MC take the stage. EPMD's "Strictly Business" album is a masterful, minimalist mix of rhythms and this band could be the highlight of the show. But Miami's 2 Live Crew and LA's NWA are far more controversial, the former for dealing explicitly with sex on its album, "2 Live Crew Is What We Are," while the latter has been accused of glorifying gang violence on such singles as "Boys In The Hood." For information, call 535-2000.

While critics sneer at Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, the group's blend of hooky pop and diluted but still intoxicating Latin rhythms has its share of pleasures. The latest single, the Top 10 "1, 2, 3," is a perfect example of the group's approach. If an English band had done something so bubbly, slick, and genre-crossing, it would probably be hailed as a great piece of pop revisionism. Instead, Estefan and MSM have to make do with their platinum records. The group plays the Pacif ic Amphitheatre Saturday. Call 634-1300.

Tickets go on sale Sunday at 9 a.m. for Jimmy Page's LA-area date at the Inglewood Forum Oct. 7. Tickets will be on sale at Ticketmaster outlets, but not the Forum box-office. For information, call 740-2000.
