Addicted To Noise editor Michael Goldberg reports:

An awesome line-up of artists will appear at this year's Tibetan Freedom concert, including R.E.M. members Michael Stipe and Mike Mills, Patti Smith, A Tribe Called Quest, Porno For Pyros, Sonic Youth, Pavement and Radiohead.

The concert will take place at Downing Stadium, Randalls Island in New York City on Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th, it was announced yesterday. It will benefit the Milarepa Fund, which funds a number of educational projects relating to the plight of the Tibetan people, and nonviolence.

For the June 7th show, the artists confirmed to appear are: A Tribe Called Quest, the Beastie Boys, Biz Markie, Bjork, Chaksam-Pa, De La Soul, Foo Fighters, Ben Harper and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Sunday's show will feature Pavement, Porno For Pyros, Radiohead, Rancid, Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, Michael Stipe and Mike Mills, and Taj Mahal.

Additional artists are expected to be announced in the weeks to come, according to Milarepa Fund spokesperson Maria Ma.

Pavement guitarist/singer Scott Kannberg told ATN in early February that the group would be playing this year's festival, and that they'd had a great time at last year's event. "That was the best concert experience we've ever had," said Kannberg. "Just the way they put it on, and the whole vibe to it was really good. It was cool." The first Tibetan Freedom Festival was organized by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch and Milarepa Fund co-founder Erin Potts. It was held in Golden Gate Park's Polo Field on June 15 and 16. The line-up included the Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Beck, the Fugees, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Yoko Ono, Cibo Matto, A Tribe Call Quest, De La Soul, the Foo Fighters, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Richie Havens and others.

That concert--which attracted about 50,000 people per day--was put on by the Milarepa Fund working with San Francisco's Bill Graham Productions; The Milarepa Fund netted over $800,000.

This year, the Milarepa Fund will be working with the New York-based Delsener-Slater concert production company. Downing Stadium has a capacity of about 28,000. Yauch has again been a key organizer; he has spent the past few months securing talent for the event.

The Milarepa Fund organization is dedicated to raising awareness about the oppression experienced by the Tibetan people since the occupation of Tibet by the Chinese government.
