Ultram (Tramadol) is an opioid analgesic to reduce middle and severe pain syndrome. The drug is a partial stimulant of the opioid receptors, so that painful syndrome of any site is reduced. Unlike Morphine or Codeine (the strongest opioid analgesics), Ultram acts softer and safer. Its connection with opioid receptors is low, and it means that a development of tolerance and a medical addiction is also low. Following doctor’s recommendations, a medical addiction does not occur or has a light form when a patient does not experience a psychological discomfort and can give up taking this medicine.

A mechanism of the action of Ultram is simple; the drug stimulates opioid receptors, has central action and blocks a conduction of the pain impulses from the spinal cord. The increase of the pain syndrome happens within 15 minutes, or maximum within 30 minutes. A rate of the pain-relieving action allows using Ultram during chronic pain syndrome as well as different muscle traumas, affections of the tissues and bones, muscle spasms.
Most patients stop having pain in 5-6 hours after the use of a dose.
A short action of Ultram makes most people take the medicine several times per day. Doctors recommend to take not more than 4 pills of Ultram 50 mg per day. The use of a pill in the dose of 50 mg once in 6 hours reduces any pain.
But in individual cases, a dose should be adjusted. The maximum allowable daily dose of Ultram is 8 pills – 400 mg per day. High doses quickly cause a development of the tolerance, and therefore they should be used for a short period, during an outbreak of the pain syndrome.
As soon as a patient feels insufficient pain-relieving effect during the use of the standard dose, the treatment should be stopped.
- As any opioid analgesic, Ultram increases the action of sedative drugs. Do not take products with a sedative action during the treatment (including alcohol that inhibits the functions of the central nervous system)
- Patients under 16 years old should not take this medicine. They have a low threshold of the drug dependence, so that the use of the pills may lead to negative consequences
- If a patient has a chronic respiratory obstruction or bronchial asthma, the use of Ultram may cause an inhibition of the respiratory function. In this case, the treatment must be stopped
Ultram (Tramadol) is the safest narcotic analgesic that does not cause side effects during the proper use. But an overdose may be dangerous.
The main symptoms are dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness, asthenia, sweating, dyspepsia, vomiting, vision disorder, and urinary difficulty. Do not neglect these symptoms. If one or several side effects appear after the use of Ultram, go to a doctor as soon as possible. In case of the apparent overdose, you should do a stomach lavage and have a symptomatic therapy under doctor’s supervision.
