SPONTANEITY KEY TO STEVE, EYDIE'S SHOW BIZ SUCCESS Author: Mark Faris

There are people living in this country today, who can't remember when Steve&Eydie wasn't one word.

Of course, there are people living in this country today, who can't remember yesterday.

But the point here is that rarely has a couple been able to combine marriage and show biz so successfully that they come to be regarded almost as one.

George Burns and Gracie Allen did it.

For a while, so did Liz and Dick, Desi and Lucy, Sonny and Cher. But they didn't have the staying power of Steve&Eydie.

Neither did Ethel Merman and Ernest Borgnine, although echoes of their yelling sessions still can be heard in mountainous areas of the country.

On Dec. 29, Lawrence and Gorme, who perform tonight, Saturday, and Sunday at the Palace Theatre in Cleveland, will celebrate their 31st wedding anniversary. (They began dating four years earlier after meeting on The Tonight Show -- when Steve Allen was the regular host.)

But, contrary to appearances, life for this middle-aged version of Ken and Barbie hasn't been entirely Cole Porter, wrist corsages and good-night kisses. 'God, no,' says Steve. 'We have our moments just like any other couple. More, probably.

'I remember one night in particular when Eydie and I got into it before a show.

'We started arguing at the hotel room and carried it right into the dressing room at the theater.

'By the time we got on stage, things were getting pretty hostile.

'We kept it going, too. We sang our songs all right. But between tunes, the verbal jabs were getting pretty obvious, and it didn't take long for the audience to pick up on it.

'They loved it. I think it was sort of a vicarious thing. Couples in the audience could see themselves in us.

'I think that's part of our appeal. Eydie and I are ourselves on stage. We're very spontaneous. Except for the music, we don't really rehearse. We read the paper and sometimes play off local news.

'Sometimes there'll be something happening in the audience we'll use. We never really know till we get out there. The act is fresher that way.

'Actually, we're not a whole lot different at home than we are on stage. There's not as much singing, but hey,' laughs Steve, 'you never know.'

Yeah, there's nothing quite like a little Bess, You Is My Woman Now harmonizing during toast and oatmeal. If nothing else, it offers a great excuse for a second shower.
