Furious fans crave more 'Addiction'

There's just no satisfying that yen for Jane's Addiction.

Fans can't get enough tickets, as evidenced by sold-out shows, including a performance Nov. 30 at the Aragon Ballroom, 1106 W. Lawrence.

And they can't get enough of the music, as evidenced by a near-riot Monday near Philadelphia that erupted when the alternative/hard rock band walked offstage after a 40-minute show.

Things just didn't "click" that night, said bassist Eric Avery in a phone interview from New York.

Jane's Addiction, cresting on the success of its new album, "Ritual de lo Habitual," relies on spontaneity for its shows - not a routine, said Avery, 25. But it pays the price when nothing jells.

Avery blamed the band's malaise on a bad stage setup and a low-key crowd. But that crowd swung into a frenzy after the shortened show, hurling bottles and rocking the band's bus, according to police and Avery. Police arrested 23 people.

Elsewhere, fans had best run to see Jane as rumors of a breakup swirl.

"We haven't decided for sure, but all of us are leaning toward that," Avery said, noting the band never set out to conquer the rock world. "Who knows what the future will bring?"
