Farrell, Pyros Come Through, Especially On Older Material

At times Porno For Pyros front man, and part-time concert promoter, Perry Farrell's incessant blather about "his art" can be boring and tedious. However, he and his band's show at the Newport Music Hall last night proved why he still deserves respect as a performer.

Farrell, always playing the beautiful freak, strutted onstage lifting a bottle of red wine as the ringleader of his freaked-out entourage. The band plowed through a tight, entertaining set that was slightly short - just over an hour.

The band opened with newer, midtempo material before charging up the packed house crowd with its propulsive theme song Porno For Pyros - a song inspired by the Los Angeles riots that followed the Rodney King verdict.

On Tahitian Moon, the first single from the recently released Good God's Urge, Farrell sings, "I don't know if I'll make it home tonight.

Drummer Stephen Perkins and former Minutemen and fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt made up a formidable rhythm section that kept things anchored. The two provided ominous undertones for the dark, driving Cursed Female from the band's self-titled debut.

Farrell led the band through a furious rendition of the Jane's Addiction rocker Mountain Song and pulled I Would For You off the shelf during the encore. The crowd's reaction was proof enough that his most enduring work was done with Jane's.

The meandering Thick Of It All was a bit of a momentum killer, but things got back on track with DiStefano's fiery guitar work on the blistering Dogs Rule the Night.

The band opened the encore with Pets, a song about aliens taking over the planet for us. Farrell should thank those masterminds out in Hollywood; thanks to the summer blockbuster Independence Day, the song seemed more urgent than ever.

Despite the show's short span and some slow spots here and there, the darkly comic Farrell and his three-ring circus act proved his onstage presence can be as sharp as his savvy concert promoter alter ego.
