Jane's ready for a 'relapse'
BYLINE: By MARC POLLACK, The Hollywood Reporter

Jane's Addiction, one of the pioneers of the alternative rock explosion, will get back together to record new material for an upcoming Warner Bros. album and follow it with a multidate tour.

Original members Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins will be joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea to record at least one new tune for the compilation album, slated for Oct. 18.

Original Jane's bassist Eric Avery was asked to rejoin the group but declined. He and ex-Ethyl Meatplow member Biff Sanders are in the group Polar Bear.

Calling the get-together a "relapse," lead vocalist and band mastermind Farrell said the new record will feature live tracks from the band's 1989-90 tour, demos, previously unreleased tracks and live tracks from the group's headlining gig at Lollapalooza '91, the first of the annual summer festivals founded by Farrell.

He said the album will include at least one new tune with the current lineup, a song called "Kettle Whistle," which is based on lyrics Farrell wrote in the late '80s.

"I have been able to have the greatest thing that ever happened to me happen twice," guitarist Navarro said of the upcoming reunion.

The new lineup has recorded together before, releasing "Hard Charger" under Farrell's Porno for Pyros moniker on the soundtrack to Howard Stern's "Private Parts." Flea played horn on "Idiots Rule," which appeared on the 1988 Jane's Addiction album "Nothing's Shocking." He also played on the last Porno for Pyros album, "Good God's Urge."

The tour kicks off Oct. 25 in San Francisco at the one-date ENIT festival, a multimedia event Farrell originally founded last year to compete with Lollapalooza after he had a falling out with that festival's other organizers.

Farrell, Perkins and Navarro got together July 4 to perform an acoustic set at the Opium Den in Los Angeles that featured such Jane's tunes as "Ocean Size" and "My Time."
