Illuminotic - Bell Ranch, Apple Valley, CA
|Location:||Bell Ranch, Apple Valley, CA|
|Recorded:||No known recording
This performance was most likely the first time Perry and Eric played together publicly. The show was a barn painting party at the ranch owned by the parents of jula Bell and took place in either July or August of 1985. According to Jula Bell "Psi Com goes Illuminotic" at this show and in addition to them the following bands also played.
Scrunge, Celebrity Skin, The Angry Samoans, Nip Drivers, Cactus Dick, Thelonius Monster, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Razebrae
In addition to playing in Illuminotic at this show Eric Avery also played bass in his band Scrunge, which is especially notable because Eric playing with Perry led to him being kicked out of Scrunge.
This show is mentioned on pages 44 and 45 of Brendan Mullen's book Whores.
Flea: I saw Psi Com at a private party on some ranch near Magic Mountain. The singer came out, and it was the craziest thing I'd ever seen. He was absolutely out of his mind on fire, shaking and quivering, every muscle in his body was doing a different dance. It was insane. I couldn't believe it. I was like "This guy is out of his mind, who is he?" And it was Perry.
Pete Weiss: The first time I saw Perry Farrell was at Jula Bell's--she had a barn painting party out in Apple Valley, two hours outside of Los Angeles. We painted half of a barn red. We were all on mushrooms--and Celebrity Skin played, an early incarnation with John Goodsall from Brand X on guitar and Cujo on drums. And then this band we didn't know started playing. It was Psi Com. Perry with the hair and the braids, dancing like there was 10,000 people out there. We were all just gawkin' at him, trippin' our brains out, wounderin' what's this guy gonna do next?
Flea: I never knew that was him until years later [when I first saw Jane's Addiction]. I put two and two together, and when I became friends with Perry he said "Oh, yeah that was me.... I was on acid that night and had a blast."
In December of 2006 Eric Avery was asked about his very brief stint in Psi Com on his blog and he replied with the following:
psi com. hmm? ok. i jammed with perry and the drummer from psi com which was my 'audition' for bass playership in psi com. thats where the groove for mountain song happened. there was no guitar player if i recall correctly. i dont think i ever played with the guitar player from psi com. but i did jam at a party with perry and the drummer. maybe psi com songs were involved. but that is all my foggy memory will give me. perry was restless and quickly wanted the two of us to start something new. i cant remember anything about the name illuminati; yes or no.
Thanks go out to Jula Bell and SDW the info.
