The night people had their day. And what a day it was.

In the bucolic setting of Waterloo Village, under sunny skies dotted by puffy white clouds, the after-hours club-hopping crowd, dressed all in black and sporting pallors that would make Morticia Addams proud, looked out of place.

But they had ventured out with their SPF 30 sunscreens (one can't risk losing that pasty look) to see a bill that was an alternative-music lover's dream. And the Lollapalooza Festival which Sunday brought together Jane's Addiction, Living Colour, Ice-T, The Rollins Band, The Butthole Surfers, and Nine Inch Nails lived up to its name.

(The illness of Siouxsie Sioux forced the cancellation of Siouxsie & the Banshees appearance. It was unknown, at press time, whether she would perform Wednesday, when the event will be repeated.)

The nine-hour Lollapalooza Festival was the brainchild of Jane's Addiction lead singer Perry Farrell. And the success of this package tour is based, in part, on the headlining status of his band.

Jane's Addiction closed the show with a sizzling set that, for the most part, reprised its Madison Square Garden concert of a few months back. Farrell is a compelling front man. But his band deserves equal credit for underscoring his vocals with tight, propulsive rhythms and metal-edged guitar play.

But there's much more to this tour, and while the night belonged to Jane's Addiction, the early evening was Ice-T's. The originator of "gangsta rap" is not for the faint of heart. His raps are obscenity-laced and his views of women (he calls them "girls") are repulsive. But his performance is mesmerizing, and when he tackles social and political issues, he's a powerful spokesman for the disenfranchised.

Ice-T also previewed his hard-rocking band Body Count, which looks poised to give some heavy-metal bands a run for their money.

The rapper's placement on the bill was most welcome after the angry intensity of The Rollins Band and vocal distortions of The Butthole Surfers and before the clanging industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails.

Only Living Colour disappointed, with a set that was long on Corey Glover's and Vernon Reid's vocal and guitar histrionics, respectively.

The Lollapalooza Festival also offered more than music. In a yellow-and-white striped tent, groups such as Greenpeace, Rock the Vote, PETA, the National Abortion Rights Action League, and the New Jersey Environmental Federation offered fans information on political and cultural issues. The same tent exhibited the work of local artists, who were selected by Farrell.

While a steady stream of young people filed through the tent, picking up brochures and donating dollars and spare change, the impact of some of the information was dubious.

For all the concern shown for people and the environment, the "moshing" pit in front of the stage was a frightful exhibition of people intent on bodily harm (to themselves and others) and the Waterloo field was a garbage-strewn mess at the end of the night.
