Warm-up display at Pyros concert would set family values on its ear

Family values would be in scarce supply Friday when Porno for Pyros made its Atlanta debut before a crowd of about 4,000 swaying in the breeze at the Masquerade Music Park. And the doormen made sure this was known. "Anybody here from Cobb County?" one yelled. No reply. "Anybody here from Cobb County?" Again, nothing. And then, one young Pyromaniac spoke up: "Yeah!" Sucker. "Don't go anywhere," he was warned, before everyone standing within earshot broke into rude laughter. "Your mother's on her way to get you."
Actually, the 55-minute Pyros set wasn't nearly as outrageous or as boring as a warm-up S&M display by members of Masquerade's Club Fetish, complete with dripping wax, unisexual bondage and vigorous spankings. Pyros vocalist Perry Farrell went to no similar extremes, but he supplemented songs from his band's debut album with circus sideshow antics by a small troupe of performers - a bit of striptease, some acrobatics, a stilt-walking hermaphrodite in a massive blond wig RuPaul would covet. "I got the devil in me!," Mr. Farrell sang in one song. But if the singer had any demons to unleash, they didn't get far past the first rows of fans. Mr. Farrell seems so absorbed in his own head trip that he becomes just another carnival attraction.
