The Enit Festival, a multi-media musical, sensory and communal touring experience, to begin August 9
DATELINE: NEW YORK

July 17, 1996--

Porno For Pyros, Black Grape, Love and Rockets, Lady Miss Kier, MeatBeat Manifesto, ORB, The Pharcyde (selected dates), Buju Banton, Sun Ra Arkestra (selected dates), Flying Neutrinos (selected dates). "What is your most far-fetched idea? Start with that." - Perry Farrell

The ENIT Festival, a multi-media musical, sensory and communal experience, will begin Friday August 9 at the Meadows, a specialty selected site east of Cleveland. The festival's 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. musical menu will include performances by ENIT impresario Perry Farrell's own Porno For Pyros, Black Grape, Love and Rockets, Lady Miss Kier, Orb, Meat Beat Manifesto, Buju Banton, and on selected dates, the Pharcyde, Sun Ra Arkestra, the Flying Neutrinos, and Rabbit In The Moon. ENIT's early afternoon to early morning entertainment agenda will also include an array of internationally acclaimed DJs, multi-media presentations, communal meals and cocktail hours, tree-planting, after hours attractions and more-all included in the price of admission. Farrell held a press conference in New York City last Friday, during which he enumerated the qualities that make ENIT unique, explained the differences between ENIT and the Lollapalooza festival he co-founded, fielded a few questions regarding his days in Jane's Addiction, and addressed various other ENIT-related issues. Among the topics of discussion:

-- Porno For Pyros' performance, which promises to be the band's most visually outrageous and musically wide-reaching to date. Future Kulture, the San Francisco-based multi-media and performance arts collective, will be visually embellishing Porno's ambitious undertaking, as well as the entire festival.

-- ENIT's embracing of dance culture in its lineup of performers and DJs. "People can think and they can talk to each other and they can move, 'cause that always feels really good...You get into a unified, group consciousness...And it lets out all your anger and all your hostility when you dance."

-- ENIT's 6 a.m. curfew and outdoor, natural settings. "We wanted to have every ENIT go all night in a fully outdoor natural environment, but city councils in some areas would not allow that. So rather than penalize the kids in the cities where we couldn't present the all-night format, we will present the show as a concert. And if we don't get it perfect every time, we tried."

-- The origin of the term ENIT, which is culled from the obscure book Cancer Planet Mission by since-vanished author Ludwig Pallmann. In the book, ENIT is a festival that unites beings of various worlds in a festival of harmony, enlightenment and cultural exchange. "It's supposedly a festival that's celebrated around the cosmos, everywhere except here on earth. So I thought, 'Now wouldn't that be swell if we could get it down here?'"

-- Tree Planting. "I wanted to give something back to the earth. So with the help of an organization called Treepeople, we will be distributing seeds at the beginning of each ENIT Festival and planting them while the Rebirth Brass Band plays. We wanted to plant trees every show, but again this was not possible at every site. So where we're able to, we'll try to give something back, to help heal the earth."

-- The communal meal included in the ENIT ticket price, as well as ENIT's happy hour. "There will be a healthy, communal meal included in the price of the ticket...For the happy hour, we're going to offer micro-brewed beer, and we're trying to find really nice small chateaus around the world to bring you some fine wine...at a reasonable price, of course."

-- Ticketmaster and forgiveness. "Forgiveness is a big part of what ENIT is about. I didn't want to hold Ticketmaster accountable for their past and they came across. So the situation now is we'll have a designated ENIT box office location in each city where there will be no surcharge. If people choose to buy tickets over the phone with their credit cards or go to a closer location, then they can pay a surcharge for that convenience. The point is they now have a choice."
