A Cabinet Of Curiosities is the Jane’s Addiction box set released by Rhino Records on April, 21, 2009. This set includes numerous demos, rehearsal outtakes, remixes, live performances, many of which were previously unreleased. The box set also comes with a DVD that includes the Soul Kiss video, and most of the band’s music videos.
In February of 2009, an initial track listing made its way online detailing the contents and sources of this collection. Interestingly enough, this early set list included some tracks that did not make it to the final product. The first of these tracks were from the “Strays” era. The first was an unreleased acoustic version of the song Just Because, then live versions of Suffer Some and The Price I Pay, both of which had previously been released on the Just Because single. These three tracks were to appear on disc 2.
The final differences between this leaked track listing and the final product were for the DVD content. The music videos were listed in a different order, and included the live Jane Says video from 1997 and a live performance of Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey which mean have actually been footage used at the end of Perry Farrell & Casey Niccoli’s film Gift. This leaked track listing also included a second listing of Mountain Song apart from the Soul Kiss content. This may have just been in error, or there were plans to include the alternate music video for this song on the disc as well. It is also worth noting the track listings for the live performances of Three Days and Then She Did from City Square in Milan, Italy were reversed leaving the three tracks listed in the order they were performed at the actual show.
Alternate Versions:
There are three physical editions of this collection. The first is a limited edition version that came in a wooden box, complete with inner doors with plastic cabinet windows. Each disc within the set comes in its own digipack CD case. Finally there is a thick booklet filled with pictures, quotes from other artists, the Nothing’s Shocking press release, and an essay penned by Steve Baltin. This limited edition version also came with a plastic envelope containing four tarot cards and four miniature voodoo dolls, one for each band member. This limited edition is said to be limited at 7500 copies, although it can still be found at random retail stores and in some cases online.
The second physical edition was a variant of the limited edition box set that was sold excursively at Best Buy. This version is identical to the standard limited edition version, however it also includes a fifth disc. This additional disc came in a cardboard slip case and includes five bonus tracks from the July 23 and July 24, 1991 Lollapalooza concert at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, in Irvine, CA.
Finally, approximately one month after the limited edition box set was released, a standard edition was released. Musically, it is identical to the limited edition box set. However, instead of a wooden box, it comes in a simple cardboard slip case. It contains the same booklet as the limited edition set, but lacks the envelope, tarot cards and voodoo dolls.
There are two iTunes versions of this album, both include two bonus tracks taken from the July 24, 1991 Lollapalooza 91 concert at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA; both of these tracks are different than the bonus tracks included on the exclusive Best Buy disc. The first iTunes version includes only the audio from the collection. The second version, marked as a “clean” version includes the censored version of the Mountain Song music video. The music on this version is not censored or edited. However, iTunes edits the displayed names of both Whores and Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey.
All other digital versions of this compilation lack the video content included on the fourth disc of the physical medium version, and include no bonus tracks. The digital versions also include an image as the album’s cover that is not found on the physical versions.
There are both US and UK promo editions of this box set, both of which include all of the musical content as the standard release. Additionally, a 10 track promo sampler was also released, containing a selection of songs from across all three discs. The cover of the sampler is the same image that is found on the cover of the booklet found on the commercial release.
